From Telco to Techco – InCites Consulting Discusses the Future of Telecom in SmartTalks
The telecommunications industry is entering a period of major transformation as operators move beyond traditional connectivity services towards more integrated, software-driven, and technology-oriented business models.
In a recent episode of SmartTalks #110, Ioannis Neokosmidis, CEO of InCites Consulting, joined journalist Christos Kotsakas to discuss the evolving role of telecom operators, the future of digital infrastructures, and the strategic shifts shaping next-generation connectivity.
The discussion focused on the transition from traditional “Telco” models towards “Techco” ecosystems, where operators are increasingly expected to act as trusted intermediaries, digital platforms, and providers of advanced technology-driven services.
Among the key themes explored were:
- the growing role of telecom operators as data custodians and trust enablers,
- expansion into cloud services, cybersecurity, fintech, and digital platforms,
- the acceleration of technology cycles through Beyond 5G and 6G developments,
- cloud-native architectures and Open RAN approaches,
- and the increasing relevance of programmable APIs and private 5G networks.
Particular emphasis was also placed on programmable connectivity and API-driven ecosystems, including work explored through the ENVELOPE Project, which investigates new business models and advanced digital service capabilities enabled by next-generation networks.
The conversation additionally examined the growing importance of investments in AI infrastructures, cloud environments, data centres, and intelligent network architectures, as well as the transition from human-centric traffic towards machine-to-machine communications and autonomous digital interactions.
According to the discussion, future competitiveness in the telecom sector will increasingly depend on the ability of organisations to adapt rapidly, establish trusted digital ecosystems, and transform data into actionable value across industries and services.
