National Backhaul Optical Network Strategy in North Macedonia

Strategic and techno-economic preparation of a feasibility study for a national backhaul optical network to strengthen broadband capacity, coverage, and resilience.

This assignment prepares a feasibility study for the establishment of a National Backhaul Optical Network (NBON) in North Macedonia, in line with the National Operational Broadband Plan.

The work includes analysis of ultrafast broadband coverage and take-up, mapping of white/grey/black areas, assessment of existing infrastructure and available capacities (ducts, pipes, optical fibres), demand and socio-economic analysis, collection of local market cost data, and preparation of preliminary design alternatives. The study also assesses costs and includes environmental and social impact analysis, taking into account climate change, human rights, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and gender equality considerations.

INCITES performs broadband infrastructure diagnostics and market/cost data collection, develops and compares alternative preliminary designs for the national backbone network, and delivers techno-economic assessments of each option.

INCITES also supports environmental and social impact assessment and contributes to the recommendation of a realistic NBON implementation plan aligned with national and European broadband objectives.
